The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is Australia's oldest and largest public art museum, located in the heart of Melbourne. With a collection of over 75,000 artworks, it is one of the most significant and comprehensive collections in the Southern Hemisphere, spanning across a range of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, decorative arts, and fashion.

The NGV was founded in 1861 and initially operated out of a small gallery space in Melbourne's State Library. As the collection grew, so did the gallery's need for a larger space, and in 1968 the current gallery complex was opened. The complex comprises two buildings: NGV International, located on St Kilda Road, and NGV Australia, located in Federation Square.

NGV International is home to an extensive collection of international art, with a particular emphasis on European and Asian art from the 17th to the 20th century. The collection includes works by some of the world's most renowned artists, including Rembrandt, Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh. In addition to the permanent collection, the gallery also hosts a range of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, featuring works from both international and Australian artists.

NGV Australia, on the other hand, focuses on Australian art, from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, from the colonial period to contemporary times. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, as well as a significant collection of Indigenous art from across the country. The gallery also hosts a range of exhibitions and events throughout the year, highlighting the diversity and richness of Australian art.

One of the most popular attractions at the NGV is the Great Hall, located in NGV International. The hall features a stunning stained-glass ceiling designed by Australian artist Leonard French, which spans over 50 meters and depicts the Southern Cross constellation. The space is often used for concerts, events, and performances, and is a popular spot for visitors to take photos.

In addition to its extensive art collections, the NGV also boasts an impressive range of facilities and services for visitors. There are multiple cafes and restaurants on site, as well as a gift shop offering a range of art-related merchandise. The gallery also runs a range of educational programs and events for children and adults, including talks, workshops, and tours.

Overall, the National Gallery of Victoria is a must-visit destination for art lovers and cultural enthusiasts visiting Melbourne. With its world-class collections, stunning architecture, and range of facilities and services, it is an important cultural institution that celebrates the diversity and richness of art and culture in Australia and beyond.
